Do I need to be 16 to start classes?

Yes!  In order to attend driving school classes in Connecticut you must be at least 16 years old. Back to top

What do I need in order to obtain a Learners’ Permit?

How do I start classes?


First select the classroom location and review the classroom schedule.  Find the start date and simply come to class with a registration form, learner’s permit or some other ID, a notebook, pen, and eye glasses (if needed). Or, if you prefer, sign up online to reserve your spot. Back to top
 

What should I bring with me to class?


On your first class you will be issued a text book and/or other course materials, you should bring them with you. In addition, bring with you a notebook, pen, and eye glasses. Back to top
 

What happens if I miss a class?


Classes are offered continuously at our main office locations.  If you attend classes at a high school, you will be able to make up one (1) class at the end of the program,  attend the class during the next session, or come to one of our main offices. Back to top
 

Do I have to make-up the same class as the one that I missed?

Can I make payments?

Yes!  To start classes you will need a deposit of $170. Back to top
 

When can I schedule road lessons?

Road lessons can be scheduled after the course is paid in full. All students must have a learner’s permit in order to drive. To schedule a lesson click here. Back to top
 

Do I have to pay for a book or workbook?

No!  Course fees listed include classroom textbook  which is to be returned at the end.  Please refer to our fee schedule for a complete list of all fees. Back to top
 

How long does it take to finish the complete course?


The classroom portion takes from 5 to 8 weeks to finish depending on the location.  Road lessons should be spaced out to allow time for practicing in between.  Generally, one week between each lesson is adequate.  Students may begin their on road training before finishing their classes. How much should I know before driving with an instructor?

You should be completely familiar with road signs, right-of-way rules and the language of the road. Some of our students have never been behind the wheel and others may have months or even years of experience. Back to top
 

What will I be doing during my driving lessons?


Each road lesson given by Elite Driving School has a number of objectives.  At the beginning of each lesson your instructor will discuss each objective.  During the lesson your instructor will introduce various drills and exercises to help you accomplish those objectives.  At the end of the lesson your instructor will list the items that still need to be practiced at home.  It is expected that each student will get at least 4 hours of practice for every 1 hour of training. Will my parent need to come to class?


If you are 16 or 17 years old and received a permit after August 1, 2008, you will need to attend a two-hour class with your parent or guardian. Please check the schedule for the next class. Back to top
 

Where will my road lessons meet?


All road lessons will start and end at a the high school or classroom location.  Under unique circumstances, a student may be dropped off at home for an additional charge. Back to top
 

Do we drive in inclement weather?

What if I need to cancel my driving lesson?


All road lessons are one-on-one with an instructor. To do this, we have to reserve a car and an instructor.   If you can not make a scheduled appointment,  you must cancel it by telephone at least 24 hours in advance. Back to top
 

What is home training?


For a 16 or 17 year old driver to obtain a license in Connecticut, they must receive:
40 Hours In-Vehicle Training
30 Hours Classroom Training which includes the 8-hour CT Safe Driving Practices Course
A home training program consists of at least 40 hours In-Vehicle and 22 hours classroom instruction given by a qualified home training instructor. In addition, the student must also attend the CT Safe Driving Practices Course. Many resources are available to assist you here. Back to top
 

Who is a qualified home trainer?


A person 20 years of age or older who has held a valid license for at least 4 consecutive years and received no suspensions within the last 4 years. The qualified trainer must be either a parent, grandparent, foster parent, or legal guardian. Or if none of the above are qualified to give training; the stepparent, brother, sister, uncle or aunt by blood or marriage, if otherwise qualified. Back to top
 

What is the 8-hour Connecticut Safe Driving Practices Courses?


Many people refer to this class as the Drug & Alcohol Class because 4 hours is spent on the effects of Alcohol and Drugs on the driving task. The course offered by Elite Driving School meets the requirements of the State of Connecticut for a CS-1 certificate. Back to top
 

I’m over 18 and I have never had a license or haven’t had one in the last 2 years, do I need to take a class?


Yes. All drivers 18 or older that have never had a Connecticut Drivers License or haven’t had one in the last two years need to take the Safe Driving Practices Class. Back to top
 

Do you offer Driver Retraining?


No. If you were ordered by the court to attend Driver Retraining, they will provide you with the locations for the classes that you need. Back to top
 

How soon can I get my license?


If you are 16 or 17 years old you must hold your learner’s permit for 120 days if you obtain at least 30 hours classroom and 8 hours in-vehicle training from a commercial driving school. If you obtain less than this amount you must hold your permit for 180 days before you are eligible for a driver’s license. If you are 18 years or older you must obtain a CT learner's permint and hold it for 90 days and take the CT safe driving practices course before you are eligible for your license. Back to top
